Pollock rules. The ocean

Not me, a card-carrying Pollock, but my finny cousin.

Salon.com interviews the author of the 2006 book, The End of the Line: How Overfishing Is Changing the World and What We Eat, the British journalist Charles Clover, who has a little good news, as well. It turns out the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich is created from sustainable fish, even certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.

No, the Marines are not inspecting deep-fried patties, at least not on orders from Washington. This would be an adjectival use referring to water. As Clover says, “McDonald’s is sustainable because it is a big company and needs continuity of supply.”

It’s people. No, it’s Alaskan pollock. The same species that Mrs. Paul has fashioned into fish sticks for decades.

I’ve never eaten a Filet-O-Fish, and now I know why. Rachael Ray, however, would say, “Yummo, pollock.” If she ever capitalizes the meal, I’ll have to explain it at home. -30-
