Don’t Raze the Razorback

Construction has proceeded enough at the site of a new movie complex in Fayetteville to be obvious that we’ll have more screens — and stadium seating just down the street — before too long. It’s on Joyce Boulevard west of the Wal-Mart and on the same side of the street.

What will happen to the town’s main Malco, the Razorback 6? The company also runs the Mall Twin. Let’s ask those who might read this with some clout or say-so to not raze the Razorback and make it a dollar house, as areas certainly our size have long enjoyed.

Dollar complexes show new movies just past their prime. Many devote a screen or more to independent, foreign and sometimes classic movies, as well as documentaries. (Tulsa has Cinemark Movies 8, whose movies still are $1 or $1.50, but Little Rock’s Market Street Cinema is just a hair cheaper than the main houses. Tulsa’s generally are second-runs, and Little Rock’s comprise indies and docs.)

I would propose the Mall Twin, as it’s just two screens and possibly more cost-efficient for the company, but I bet Malco makes nice revenue there as parents can park the kids there to enjoy the newest releases while they shop.

No, six screens with a mix of studio and small flicks, at a cheaper ticket, should make money here seven days a week, with all the college-age and artistic types around here. -30-
