Filing Happy Returns

The Fayetteville Public Library has hit another milestone: The shelving for DVD Recent Returns now is overwhelmingly packed while the DVD stacks have about one disc every other row. Normally, the regular rows show off so much of the handsome, stained woodgrain, and the to-be-shelved are just a little busy.

Aggravating. Is it on purpose? Is it a way for the library administration to say to its patrons, see, our funding will be stagnant since a dedicated sales tax was defeated. We cannot afford our librarians to perform mundane tasks and the volunteers are busy elsewhere.

This, never mind that the patrons very likely did vote for the minimal tax yet they’re the ones being punished.

Maybe it was just a shorthanded week. But the pleasure in browsing in a library is enhanced by organization, say alphabetical by title, and the sloppy video Recent Returns should not be more than half-full, perhaps just the titles that came in overnight. -30-
