The knit sheets we grabbed in the dark annoyed,
\nour flannels would slide in woven linens.<\/p>\n

Cascading limbs threatened the bed upstairs
\nso with four blankets below, three above,
\nwe lay with cats by the washer\/dryer.<\/p>\n

Not merely sleepless, for 10 hours we stared
\nunder the hurricane in slow motion:
\nCrack crack crackle groan — pause — thud,
\nand that only meant some bough missed the house.<\/p>\n

Six times, or was it eight, giant branches
\nstruck — nothing silent in this silence.
\nAt daybreak we roamed up and down, pane to pane,
\nseeing others’ damage, guessing at ours.<\/p>\n

This was no Katrina, but still but still
\na perfect storm of day-long rain at 34
\nthen trees and lands seize up at 26.<\/p>\n

Alert though red-eyed, shivering though clothed,
\nwe chose foods, the house a walk-in Sub-Zero.<\/p>\n

Which? Rent a room, or chance another night.<\/p>\n
