Lemann is former dean of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.<\/p>\n<p>II. Suspect of this and other similar attacks: Winston Moseley. This victim, bar manager Catherine &#8220;Kitty&#8221; Genovese. It took him three separate attacks to kill her.<\/p>\n<p>III. The uncovered story<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Two attacks in 35-minute span. Witness Robert Mozer&#8217;s yells ended first attack, which is in the open; two others called police. Ambulance arrives at site of second attack, interior hall, neighbor Sophia Farrar holds a dying Genovese.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Witness Joseph Fink took a nap after first attack. Witness Karl Ross saw both attacks, called two friends to ask for advice, 2nd pal said come over then he called police.<\/p>\n<p>IV. Principals &#8211; Journo<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A.M. Rosenthal, 41, wrote his account <em>Thirty-Eight Witnesses<\/em> later in &#8217;64, new edition in &#8217;99. Main proponent of the Silent Witness angle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">NYC Police Commissioner Michael Murphy. Their lunch, March 23<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Reporter Martin Gansberg. <a title=\"The New York Times: Martin Gansberg, 74, a Reporter And Editor for 43 Years at Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/05\/04\/obituaries\/martin-gansberg-74-a-reporter-and-editor-for-43-years-at-times.html\" target=\"_blank\">Died in 1995<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>V. Principals &#8211; Real<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Catherine &#8220;Kitty&#8221; Genovese, 28, bar manager, in a year-long gay relationship. Partner still alive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Winston Moseley, 29, punch-card operator, African-American, married 2 kids. Also burglar. Confessed to this and another confirmed murder. Trial was over sanity. Eyewitnesses not called. Now 79, in prison. Escape in 1968, attacked one or two women before capture.<\/p>\n<p>VI. Two books this winter<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a title=\"&quot; Kitty Genovese The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime that Changed America&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/Kitty-Genovese\" target=\"_blank\">Kitty Genovese: The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime That Changed America<\/a>,<\/em> by Kevin Cook. Backs revisionist account. Says the silent, unnamed witnesses did not know what it was they heard. (Quarrel in or outside nearby bar.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a title=\"&quot;Kitty Genovese: A True Account of a Public Murder and Its Private Consequences&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.skyhorsepublishing.com\/book\/?GCOI=60239100182370\" target=\"_blank\">Kitty Genovese: A True Account of a Public Murder and Its Private Consequences<\/a>,<\/em> by Catherine Pelonero. Promotional site: <a title=\"Promotional website for Pelonero book\" href=\"http:\/\/kittygenovesebook.com\" target=\"_blank\">kittygenovesebook.com<\/a>. Backs original account, though finds only 33 witnesses. Pelonero is said to argue that the ensuing outcry did so much good that using unnamed sources, if they all existed, is justified<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Christian Science Monitor<\/em> also <a title=\"The Christian Science Monitor: &quot;Kitty Genovese: 50 years later, New York murder still fascinates&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Latest-News-Wires\/2014\/0311\/Kitty-Genovese-50-years-later-New-York-murder-still-fascinates\" target=\"_blank\">contrasts both new books<\/a>. It has a link to a 3:28 <a title=\"WPIX video\" href=\"http:\/\/landing.newsinc.com\/shared\/video.html?freewheel=90962&amp;sitesection=csmonitor_nws_us_sty_vmpp&amp;VID=25694156\" target=\"_blank\">local TV account<\/a> about both books.<\/p>\n<p>VII. The greater good<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Development of the concept By-stander Effect. Defined <a title=\"Definition of By-stander Effect\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/bystander-effect\" target=\"_blank\">briefly by <em>Psychology Today<\/em><\/a> and in a <a title=\"&quot;The Kitty Genovese murder and the social psychology of helping: The Parable of the 38 Witnesses&quot; by Rachel Manning, Mark Levine, Alan Collins. American Psychologist, Sep 2007\" href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&amp;id=2007-13085-001\" target=\"_blank\">2007 article in <em>American Psychologist<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> noted by Lemann.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">&#8220;Psychologists Bibb Latane and John Darley arrived at a counterintuitive conclusion: the greater the number of bystanders who view an emergency, the smaller the chance that any will intervene. People tend to feel a &#8216;diffusion of responsibility,'&#8221; says the Rasenberger 2004 article.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">911 emergency number &#8212; The <a title=\"See history section in this Wikipedia account\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/9-1-1\" target=\"_blank\">program began in 1968<\/a>. The idea had been bandied about for years. Wikipedia doesn&#8217;t mention Genovese case.<\/p>\n<p>VII. Conclusions<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This wasn&#8217;t good journalism, even in 1964. Ends do not justify the means.
